Wk3. The Secret to Peace in the Middle of a Storm.
We all have that subtle feeling that life should count for something. That our time on earth should have an impact. That there are people counting on us to bring them to God. What kind of legacy will result from your time in this world? Who will you reach? At Life Fellowship we believe that God created YOU for a purpose and that there are people who are “Counting On You” to help make a difference in their lives. Join us on Sunday September 11th and 18th and discover how to make every minute count.
The Word of God is the most controversial book on this planet. There have been battles waged because of the contents of its pages. And I don’t know about you, but there are many times when I’m reading Scripture and I come across something radical. Something ridiculous. Something that doesn’t make sense at first glance.
So here are 3 things I can’t believe the Bible actually says:
01. Take Less and Give More
Acts 20:35 “…remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
Most likely you’ve heard this before and maybe you’ve even taught it to your kids. But if we really stop and think about this statement, it becomes so apparent that this is an extremely hard motto to live by. I love getting gifts or when someone helps ME out. I love being on the receiving end of good things. But Paul quotes Jesus himself as saying “hey, it’s not about having people serve our needs, it’s about serving others.” That’s when you are truly blessed.
02. You Have to Lose in Order to Win
What!?! Here is a verse that can drive you crazy:
Matthew 10:39 “Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”
This paradox is yet another ridiculous claim by the Bible. And even though it’s ridiculous and doesn’t make sense at first glance, when you dig down deeper into the text you realize how truly liberating this verse can be. If you try to hold on to your own life and if you try to figure things out on your own then the Bible makes it clear that you have no hope. But, if you’ll let go and let God then you can have true life and life to the fullest. Which of course is easier said then done.
03. Don’t Put a Ton of Stock in This Life
Jesus’ half brother has some interesting things to say about this life we live here on Earth.
James 4:13-15 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
As American’s we can so easily get caught up in the “American Dream”. And even though we may never verbalize it, sometimes we get stuck in the mindset of “I just need this house, or this car, or my career needs to get to this point and then I’ll be happy.” And there is nothing wrong with those things, but the Bible shows us that all of that stuff pales in comparison to building God’s Kingdom.
Even though the word of God is filled to the brim with radical things, if we’ll step out and begin to follow His leading that’s when we’ll begin to see radical results.
